Mower Winter Storage Checklist

A little end-of-season care can make spring startup much easier.

When mowing season winds down, it is tempting to park the mower and forget about it. A little storage prep can prevent stale fuel problems, dead batteries, rust, and spring frustration.

Clean the mower
Remove grass buildup from the deck and exterior. Built-up grass holds moisture and can hide problems.

Handle fuel correctly
Follow the owner's manual for storage fuel guidance. Stale fuel is a common spring startup problem.

Change or check oil
Some owners prefer fresh oil before storage. At minimum, check the condition and level.

Inspect blades and belts
End of season is a good time to find worn parts before the spring rush.

Care for the battery
Store or maintain the battery according to the manufacturer's guidance.

Park it somewhere protected
A dry, covered space helps protect the mower from weather and corrosion.
