Mower Won't Start - Common Causes

A mower that will not start may have a simple fuel, battery, filter, or safety-switch issue.

A mower that will not start is frustrating, especially when the grass is already tall. Before assuming the worst, it helps to work through the common causes.

Fuel problems
Old fuel, water in the fuel, clogged filters, or a dirty carburetor can all cause starting trouble. Fuel that sat for months is always suspect.

Weak battery
If the mower clicks, turns slowly, or does nothing, the battery and connections should be checked before chasing bigger problems.

Dirty air filter
An engine needs clean air. A clogged filter can make starting harder and running worse.

Spark plug issues
A worn or fouled plug can keep the engine from firing correctly. Replacing a plug is simple, but the correct part matters.

Safety switches
Seat switches, brake switches, PTO switches, and neutral settings can prevent starting when something is not in the right position.

If the basic checks do not solve it, avoid repeated cranking. Special Ops Mower can help diagnose no-start problems and decide whether repair makes sense.
